Whisky Priest in the New York Times

More new cover criticism later this week, I promise, but in the mean time, I'm interviewed at the New York Times's technology site, talking about Whisky Priest Books and being your own niche classics publisher. (Said books are available here (worldwide), here (Amazon US) and here (Amazon UK).

It's nice to be recognized by the Times, However, Lulu's on-demand printing is much more expensive than CreateSpace or Lightning Source, and Lulu probably offers no advantages over the others. You could charge less, make more, or both.

That's probably true for people based in North America or Europe. My choice of Lulu was based on the fact they have an Australian printing outlet, and so I don't have to haemorrhage cash for postage in order to get copies of my own proofs.

Have you considered publishing accompanying eBook editions? Since these are PD titles, there are probably already eBook copies of (some of) them out there, but so many PD eBooks are rife with formatting errors, etc. It would be great to see PD eBooks that came from a publisher who obviously cares about quality.

Well, done, James. You are an inspiration. Now if I could just encourage you to take the few hundred dollars you've amassed and open an office in Canada.

Congrats on the Interview, and Happy New Year! I just read it. I am watching "Obselidia" now with my kids and thought about you. Have you seen it?

Karl, I hadn't done that as most of these titles are already available free, as you say, so it seems mean to charge for them. But I'm still thinking about it.

Brian, thank you: you can be the honorary Canadian director of the press!

Drew, I'd never even herd of that film, but it looks like just mu cup of tea. Cheers--I'll track it down.

Nice! Hope it brings some extra sales - if I thought I could get away with bringing more books into the home I'd pick up a few (from lulu) right now.

Especially the Zweig. Just finished one of his last night and could easily do some more already...

Thank you. That's one issue I have--every book I publish has to be brought into the house past the eagle eyes of my wife.
